Jane Hattersley was just ten years old when she stitched her sampler in 1832. She combined bands of alphabets with a large area of motifs and worked with just seven colors of floss.

Jean Farish first became acquainted with Jane Hattersley's delicate work in the summer of 2018 when Salem Academy & College offered some of the school’s assets at auction. The simplicity of the motifs and the colors caught her eye and she knew she had to share Jane with modern day stitchers everywhere. Research into Jane’s life and times are ongoing.

The sampler is 202 stitches across and 195 stitches down and is stitched entirely in cross stitch. The stitched area is approximately 12.75" x 12.25" when worked on 16-stitches-per-inch fabric. It can be stitched on linen, evenweave, or Aida, in any count. This project is suitable for stitchers of any level.

When Jean re-framed the original sampler, she was able to more closely match the colors used by Jane. They are listed as the "original" color way. The "traditional" color way matches the colors seen on the front of the antique. The "classic" color way is Jean's adaptation based on the front of the antique.
